"My wife's treatment"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Neurosurgery

(as a relative),

Since my wife returned from surgery she has been abandoned in a side room, in the 10 days on N2 she has only see a doctor twice. The ward doctor came in at 8am, saw she was eating breakfast, so walked out and never came back. This is on top of my wife being left in her day clothes overnight when the staff were singing happy birthday to someone. I am disgusted at the treatment

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback about your recent experience. We are really sorry to read that you feel that your wife has been forgotten about. We are very proud of our standards of care on N2 and want to provide high quality care to all patients on the ward. We welcome any feedback to help us improve. If you have any concerns, these can be raised with members of staff in the team, so that they can seek to resolve these straight away.

In terms of your wife being seen by a doctor, a ward round is conducted every day with the nursing and medical staff at 0700hr. As this is first thing in the morning this may have taken place before relatives arrive to visit, and therefore may not be aware what has been said. The senior nurse from the ward round then shares information with the ward team so everyone has the same information. We also have posters encouraging to “ ask for the nurse in charge if you need to speak to a medical person”. Our Doctors and Nurse Practitioners' office is on the ward corridor so we have easy access to them. There is always a senior nurse on the ward on every shift, so there will always be someone available to speak to if you have any concerns or queries you wish to raise with the nurse in charge.

Regarding being in her day clothes overnight, patients have the right to make decisions about what they wear and when they get undressed if they have the capacity to do so, and so decisions around clothing worn are made by the patient and respected by the staff.

If you would like a direct response to your concerns from the department, please contact our PALS team on 0114 271 2400 or by emailing sth.pals@nhs.net. The PALS team will ask you to share some personal details in order for us to investigate this matter for you and provide more advice about your specific situation.

Once again we are really sorry to read about this recent experience, and would like to take this opportunity to wish your wife all the best with any ongoing care and treatment.
