"Two contrasting experiences"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency East Surrey Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

Children’s ED were brilliant with our little girl - we’d been sent by our local GP.

The team on ED were efficient and kind with our daughter, giving us the time we needed to know she would be OK. Special mention to Sophie who was brilliant with her and trying to get inhalers in her! All of the staff were smiley and friendly.

Unfortunately as we were sent by our local GP it then meant we had to be seen by the Paediatric team - we waited over 5 hours to be seen by them (in this time the brilliant ED team has treated our daughter).

The Pediatric doctor arrived and assessed her, we were happy as we felt we were getting somewhere, but they then had to check with the consultant. The consultant arrived and advised us of more stuff they wanted done as we were not convinced our daughter was OK, even though she said she was fine.

The consultant said they'd be back in an hour. 2 1/2 hours later we were still waiting - we spoke to the ED nurse in charge and they were really kind. They gave us what we needed and enabled us to take our little girl home to rest and recover.

We couldn’t have been better treated by Children’s ED, but the Paediatric consultant was disappointing in the time took, care given & manner to small children and us as parents.

Dear Aimee

I am saddened to hear of your contrasting experience with the service here at SASH. The paediatric emergency department team are fantastic, and I am pleased to hear that your experience within the department was positive. Unfortunately this time of the year is incredibly busy and there are significant pressures across all of our paediatric services to ensure that all patients are safely assessed and treated. With only one paediatric consultant to cover our paediatric emergency department and child assessment unit, this can impact on waiting times to be seen for a senior review, and patients are prioritised in line with their presenting emergency.

I sincerely apologise that you felt the care was disappointing, and would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you

Best wishes

Kayleigh Goddard
