I arrived at Wishaw General A&E with my daughter who was having acute stomach cramps and being sick. After triage assessment, we were advised by the triage nurse that if my daughter was in pain, we could ask for calpol. After asking 3 times over 2 hours, I had to result to going to the shop within WGH to buy pain medication. This is not in the A&E department, risking her name being called and missing her slot with a doctor.
In total we waited 7 hours to be seen. I found the staff on reception to be unhelpful, unknowledgeable, unbothered and crass.
I found the doctor that eventually seen us to be much of the same, very unprofessional and nonchalant, in my view. Their assessment was tapping my daughter's stomach, said that her stomach wasn’t distended and then asked me - what do you want me to do? This was in between them leaving the room several times mid-conversation, not explaining clearly what they were doing.
I did ask the doctor if there was an option to ensure that she did not have a blockage or a kink in her bowel or intestines, but they told me, in what I feel was a patronising manner, that they did not scan children as radiation causes cancer and to maybe not give her fried food.
We left A&E after being assessed for a total of 4 minutes with my daughter still in pain.
