"I do not feel my mum was treated with dignity and respect"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

My mum was recently admitted to A&E via ambulance with severe abdominal pain. Once she had arrived at A&E she had a little wait for a scan to see what was going on.

The doctor from A&E received her results and explained to my mum that all she had was a pocket of gas and that she needed to take painkillers and go home. My mum was adamant that something else was wrong. She pushed to be kept in for further checks. The doctor/consultant told my mum multiple times that it was nothing but as my mum demanded to be seen, they decided to put her to the ambulatory care ward.

A porter transferred her by wheelchair and left her in the corridor of the ambulatory unit. My mum had just been given morphine and was left being sick and becoming very poorly in the corridor. A member of staff then came out and shouted to get my mum a bed.

It turned out my mum had a gallstone obstruction and required immediate treatment and surgery. My mum was really unwell.

I understand that A&E can be busy but I do not feel my mum was treated with dignity and respect. She had to fight to be heard and was subsequently left in a hospital corridor.

The treatment my mum received after leaving A&E was brilliant so thank you to everyone that helped my mum :)

Dear authenticsp38

I am very sorry to hear about aspects of your Mums care on her recent attendance to the Emergency Department. I would be grateful if you would consider contacting the NHS Tayside feedback team with your Mums name, date of birth, date of attendance and details of this care opinion post, along with your contact details. This will then allow them to forward me your Mums details and I will be able to investigate and feedback to the clinicians involved.

I am sorry again about your Mums' experience and hope she is recovering. I really appreciate you taking the time to post - by listening and acting on posts like this this can we strive for improvements and learning.

The feedback team can be contacted by email on: tay.feedback@nhs.scot.

your sincerely

Dr Andrew Kinnon
