I was suffering with severe acne and had exhausted all other measures including over the counter medications and other lifestyle changes but found that my acne was getting progressively worse and was advised by a pharmacist to see my GP. I had rang my GP to book an appointment but there was no appointment available for the following few days. I was informed that I should ring a week later early in the morning so that I could get an emergency appointment. I took the day off on Friday to be able to visit my GP and the receptionist had booked me in to see the doctor (she had explained that she would explain to the doctor it is an emergency and that I couldn't get any other time off work).
When I had arrived for my appointment, the GP before asking me the problem asked "if you didn't get this appointment would you have gone into A&E? ". I said that although I really did feel the need to see my GP straight away I would not have considered this to be an emergency to have to admit myself into A&E.
My GP's reply to this was "then please leave I refuse to see you".
I explained that I had waited for this appointment for a week and was quite desperate as my face was inflamed and very painful due to cystic acne which meant I was having to cover my face!
The GP then asked me to reveal my face and without seeing both sides simply said "that's not an emergency, please leave and make an appointment for up to 2 weeks time".
Really angry and frustrated and very let down I asked why I wasn't informed about this earlier and that I had to take the day off to see the GP, but the GP simply failed to treat me and was explaining for 10 minutes why this service is mainly for people who are severely ill who would probably need to go to A&E, in which time I could have been seen and had much needed medication prescribed.
Very devastated and appalled by the service I received, I decided to change my GP.
A few days later, I noticed my face getting a lot worse I rang the NHS for help (as I still couldn't get any time off work to make a new patients health check with my new GP) and was advised to go to a walk in clinic after work which I did. I was seen by the doctor who diagnosed me with progressive acne and said I need to see a dermatologist which my GP needs to refer me to but prescribed antibiotics in the mean time. He had also asked what was said at my previous appointment with my GP (as talked about above) and showed me the notes which my GP had recorded and had mentioned that I came in regarding light eczema! Which this GP that I was being seen by said I clearly had progressed stage acne, which was really hindering my confidence and self-esteem.
I am absolutely appalled by the service I had received at Woodhead Road Surgery. I feel that no one deserves to have their time wasted and messed around like I have been and shouldn't be passed from pillar-to-post.
"Bad experience with GP"
