The Surgical Immediate Assessment Unit at QEUH. I went in and already knew it was busy. Had my Bloods taken, Temp, Heart Rate etc. I told the person who took my bloods If I could have something for the sickness and pain. They said they would pass it onto the Nurse. I asked again 2 hours later as nobody had given me anything. 5.5 Hours after arriving in the department and I've finally just received painkillers after asking 4 times.
I understand the department is busy and there is a backlog on blood tests and/or availability of doctors but the absolute minimum care patients should receive is an update to their care (if bloods have come back or not, what a patient is waiting for next, expected wait time) and management of their pain and/or discomfort.
The water jugs are often empty and the one toilet disgusting. Most patients, including myself don't mind waiting, we understand the reasons why but the least you can do is keep us informed and comfortable in the meantime.
They also need to do something about the heat in the department. There are no windows and no ventilation which makes you feel worse. If you do manage to go out for some fresh air, the nearest door by SDUCC is always full of smokers as is any other door to and from the hospital. When it's the only air you have access to because instead your left in a windowless broom cupboard for 6 hours, it's unacceptable.
