"Excellent care"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

(as a relative),

Recently my mother took unwell at home. Mum has a care package in place with carers calling into her 4 times a day and has MS.

I live 1.5 hours a way.

Mum's carers made me aware of the concern in the AM and kept me posted throughout until a decision was made for hospital transfer. One of the carers who was off duty even went to the hospital to be with mum whilst I made my way there.

The commitment and compassion shown by mum's carers on a daily basis is second to none. Without the domiciliary care service mum's current level of independence would not be possible and as a family we are eternally grateful.

Mum was then transferred to Altnagelvin where she received 1st class care and support from the doctors, nurses and hcas. There was a long wait for a bed in the ward and mum was in a and e from Friday until Monday afternoon until a bed became available but the person centred care that mum received by a team that were clearly under pressure should be given recognition.

Hello KatherineC,

My name is Michelle Scott Patient Client Experience Lead for the Trust. Thank you so much for taking the time out to leave your story about your mum's experience. I was delighted to read that the domiciliary care your mother receives is so good. Some domiciliary teams are managed within the trust and some are independent. It is unclear from your story if the carers are trust staff however I have shared your story with community services who were delighted to hear that you and your family as well as your mums really think so much of the service. To maintain a persons independence as much as possible is invaluable and we are grateful you shared this with us.

I am sorry for long wait in emergency department however it was great to hear you felt the care was first class. We are facing extreme pressures and we really do appreciate the feedback and people's kindness and patience as we work to the best of our abilities.

hope your mum is recovering well

kind regards

Michelle Scott
