"My husband's hospital journey"

(as a relative),

My husband had been suffering headaches for a few days. Then one evening he became quite confused, restless and wondering around our flat holding onto furniture and door frames for support. I was very frightened for him. I thought he was going to fall. Every time l asked him to sit down he just got back up again.

He became incontinent and wee'd on the kitchen floor. He became incoherent and stopped talking. His eyes were vacant and glazed. I phoned for an ambulance. I was really concerned and panicky.

The paramedics arrived. They were lovely, showing great concern. I went with him in the ambulance to DRI. He had a seizure while in the ambulance, which horrified me.

In A&E he became very agitated. Doctors had to sedate him. I cried, but thankfully he was at last settled. Tests and scans were carried out. They found 6 abscesses on his brain. I was told it could be life threatening. He was transferred to Sheffield Hallamshire neurological critical care. Kept sedated for approx two weeks. Tests carried out to identify the bacteria. Turned out it entered through a broken tooth.

Long story short, he spent over three months in hospital, ending up back at DRI and then finally in Balby neurological rehab. Magnolia Lodge. He went into hospital in the middle of November 2024 and he is finally coming home. Fantastic care through out the whole journey. So much has happened in-between l can't write it all down. So much sadness, distress and anxiety endured by the whole family. I can't thank the NHS enough.

Special thanks to the team at Magnolia Lodge, utterly focused and patient centred. Hurrah for the NHS, where would we be without you. God only knows, bless you all from the bottom of my heart. I still have my husband. He has suffered some memory loss and other issues, but he still has his sense of humour.

And, now, a new journey is about to begin for both of us with the continuing care and support of the NHS team at home.

Thankyou so very much. XXX

Good morning,

Firstly, I want to say how sorry I am that your husband had to endure something so terrifying. I'm sure it was a really tough time for the both of you, to say the least.

That being said, I am so pleased to hear that he received excellent care whilst at DRI and across his journey. I'm sure you'll agree that it really does make a difference.

Thank you for leaving this feedback, and I wish you both the best for this new journey you are about to embark on.

Kind regards,

Dionne

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to share feedback about your husband's experience of care over the past few months. We are ever so sorry to read about your husband's hospital journey, it must have been an extremely scary and stressing time for you all.

However, we are really pleased to read about the high quality care your experienced throughout your husband's care pathway and we are so pleased to read that he is now discharged home. We hope he is recovering well at home with the support of community care teams.
