"Caring, professional staff at every stage"

About: Trauma & orthopaedics / Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre Victoria Hospital / Pre-assessment

(as the patient),

My whole experience has been extremely positive, benefiting from caring, professional staff at every stage.

My initial meeting with Mr. Dunstan was very reassuring and explained the likely nature of the operation. It was pleasing to have confirmation that he would liaise with other consultants who are addressing other ongoing health issues.

The pre-assessment meeting offered further clarification and reassurance and relevant information was sought/ tests undertaken in a very efficient manner. Support literature was given, to help me to prepare for the operation, which was most appreciated and useful.

On the day of the operation, admission procedures were smooth and indeed comforting. The whole ambience of the facility was calm, reassuring and supportive and this continued throughout my stay.

I was taken to Ward 1 and settled in quickly, thanks to the care and attention of all staff encountered. I was prepared for the operation and taken to the operating theatre.

I was very carefully monitored throughout the pre-operation procedure and presumably during surgery, to ensure no discomfort or concern was experienced. Bruce Springsteen’s contribution to proceedings was most welcome: no sounds, sights or discomfort were experienced throughout!

The aftercare back in the ward was second to none. All members of the team were so caring, attentive and encouraging, with welcome touches of humour. Some sickness and dizziness were experienced and quickly addressed. Monitoring was constant and pain relief effective.

I wish to record my highest praise and gratitude for the degree of expertise, skill, kindness and professionalism demonstrated by the whole team. A very positive ethos has been established which is to the credit of every team member encountered, which can only be beneficial to the wellbeing of  all patients. This did not end when I was discharged: I had reason to contact staff on the ward over a couple of emerging concerns and these were answered promptly and effectively.

The information on exercises etc., offered by the physiotherapist, online and on paper, all contributed to my recovery. The final meeting with the surgeon confirmed that all was going to plan: again, most reassuring.

Sincere thanks again to you all. We are so fortunate to have this facility and your example of good practice would offer an exemplary model to other hospitals.

Dear AppreciativeC,

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback regarding your recent stay within the National Treatment Centre.

I am so glad you felt that your admission process was smooth and comforting to you. Patients can usually feel quite anxious awaiting surgery so I am delighted to learn that you were made to feel at ease and that the relaxed environment also contributed towards this.

The staff within the unit will be proud to learn that you felt your care was second to none. The team work very hard to ensure patient care is individualised whilst showing care and attention at the same time.

It is reassuring to hear that the post operative information leaflets helped to aid your recovery and allowed you to know who to contact when you required.

I would like to wish you all the best with your ongoing recovery.

Best Wishes and Take Care,

Aileen Mackin ( Charge Nurse within NTC Ward)
