"Staff was really nice, very professional"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) St John's Hospital / GP Out of Hours Service (Lothian Unscheduled Care Service)

(as a service user),

I had been self managing a pscioratic arthritis flare for 10 days, thought I'd got on top of it. However on Good Friday phoned NHS24 for advice as my hands, wrists, feet, ankles had swollen up and the pain had become unmanageable. It felt like my whole body was on fire, so thought I'd see if they had any advice.

The call handler was excellent, the clinical nurse said she'd contact St John's and within half hour a Dr had phoned. I believe his name was Dr Wang from out of hours at SJH. He reassured me and said a steroid injection was the best idea. He kindly arranged for me to collect the dexomethazone from our local pharmacy, had appt an hour later and he gave me the injection. He was really nice, very professional, apologised for us having to collect the medicine, and said he could see how sore my hands looked.

Please pass my thanks on to him for helping me today.

Dear Wendyb6969,

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I was sorry to learn you had cause to contact the 111 service for what sounds like very painful symptoms.

I note there are a few services tagged to your story, I reply on behalf of NHS 24.

It is great to hear of your positive patient journey from calling 111 to your Out of Hours appointment and I am delighted to hear that you found the NHS 24 Call Handler to be excellent!

If you wish to share some further information with me, including your Care Opinion username, I can locate the staff member you spoke with and share your Care Opinion story with them. We always like to ensure that staff see positive feedback to reinforce for them how valued their care is when people call our services.

You can contact me by email at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk.

Thank you again for your kind words.

Best wishes,

Stephanie
