"Concern about practice of using gloved finger in mouth of newborn baby"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care

(as a relative),

A relative recently gave birth to her baby. She and her husband received excellent care from all staff concerned, however one incident left her feeling uncomfortable and concerned. The baby required a small non invasive test at the bedside. The health professional doing the testing used a gloved finger inserted into the baby's mouth as a pacifier. My relative felt very uncomfortable, given the advice regarding the importance of sterilised bottles and teats. She wonders of this is normal accepted practice. Why not use a sterile teat ?

Dear cepheusyr37

I wish to congratulate your relative and family on the birth of their baby. I hope the family are doing well and soaking up the exciting experiences that come introducing a new a baby into the family unit

I wish to thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, it is really valuable to us as a service to understand our families perspectives and recognise where we have achieved your expectations for your pregnancy and birth journey to ensure we continue to drive improvements with your voice leading the conversations.

I am sorry there was an aspect of the care provision that you felt unsure of the rationale during an assessment of your baby. Without further information and detail to understand the clinical circumstances prior to the assessment, we would be unable to provide further clarity or assurance. If you would wish your individual care to be reviewed, we would please ask you to get in touch with our patient feedback team tay.feedback@nhs.scot. Where we can review your individual care provision and provide a formal response.

I wish you and your family all the very best

Warm wishes

Steph Gardiner
