Approximately 15 months ago I responded to a Prostate screening offer from my GP. This found that I had raised PSA. I subsequently had a biopsy which discovered cancer but not widespread or aggressive. I was put under active surveillance for 12 months with 3-monthly blood tests.
Earlier this year it was found that the cancer had changed. I had very prompt appointments with a Urologist and then Oncologist in quick succession at Pilgrim Hospital. It was agreed that I should undergo a combination of hormone treatment and radiotherapy.
I had hormone tablets and an injection, and started radiotherapy with daily trips to Lincoln Hospital. The team in the radiotherapy unit is absolutely superb - from the receptionists to the staff operating the machinery. I cannot speak highly enough. What could have been a traumatic experience was simple, relaxed and friendly. Their whole demeanour and professionalism inspired relaxation and hope.
My radiotherapy journey was relatively short - only 20 treatments. At the end I rang the bell and received a certificate of completion and was able to thank the staff publicly. These are amazing people doing an amazing job. There is still a way to go with further hormone treatment, but the future is bright.
