I attended a long awaited Rheumatology appointment recently.
Parking was very difficult and, despite arriving at Ninewells with over 30 minutes to spare, I arrived in the department with less than 5 minutes to spare. I was still early.
The nurse was chatting at Reception when I arrived. When I presented myself to Reception, the nurse called me straight through. I advised that I really needed to visit the bathroom as I had left home over 90 minutes previously. The nurse looked very pointedly to the clock on the wall; I was still early so made my way to the nearby patient toilet.
I was still on time when I came back into the waiting area. I was summoned through to a room and noted a blood pressure machine so advised that my blood pressure would likely be elevated after the stress of getting to the appointment. The nurse curtly replied by asking me if I'd been asked to bring a urine sample. I hadn't. They'd seen me visit the toilet. Their question made no sense.
Despite it being clear that I was still decompressing from my journey and parking, the nurse immediately took my blood pressure, which was elevated. They made no comment when I suggested retaking it once I'd settled and sent me back to the waiting area.
As I waited for my appointment, this nurse stood at Reception chatting and eating sweets from a bowl. I sat for almost ten minutes. My blood pressure could have been retaken. I did not see the nurse admit another patient in the time I waited.
I ask the question; what is the point of taking a stressed individual's blood pressure? It's highly likely to be inaccurate, so why enter this into the patient's records? I did ask the doctor at the start of my appointment, who initially brushed it off.
My actual appointment with the Rheumatologist was excellent. Can't fault her; very professional and thorough and hopefully started a process to find out more about my health.
But I was very unimpressed by a nurse being paid to admit patients with no obvious clinical acumen and a poor attitude.
"Unimpressed by nurse's attitude"
