"Lack of water machine"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

Husband was sent to Hairmyres surgical Ambulatory unit by GP. When we got to the hospital was told to go to A&E. After sitting for hours I looked to see if I could get a drink of water there is a notice saying ask a member of staff. The staff were very busy. Went to main entrance but door was locked. There was also other people looking to find a way to get some fluids. Why is there no water machine in the waiting area? There was a small water jug, but it was empty.

In total we were there for 8 and a half hrs. I did manage to get some water and the staff were by great. Both doctors who saw my husband were so helpful and informative. As it is so important to keep hydrated I think this seriously needs to be looked at.

Dear HarBill

Thank yoh for taking the time to share your feedback regarding lack of fluids available in the A&E waiting room. Following a recent care opinion post, I asked for a review as fully agree that there should be easy access to water.

The ED and catering team were planning to change the vending machine to a mixture of drinks and snacks. I am sorry if this has not yet happened. I will follow this up today.

There should always be access to water and I apologise that we have not provided this basic need.. We will review current process and will learn from your very helpful feedback.

I will also share your comments with the wider team and thank you again.

Kind regards

Lise
