"My wife's treatment"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

In March of 2024 my late wife was admitted to Dr Gray's hospital in Elgin where she was diagnosed with a blockage in the bowel, treatment was started and a cannula was inserted into her wrist.

While visiting her the following afternoon I noticed that her arm was swollen and consistent with the cannula being blocked, I informed the member of staff assigned to her and pointed out the swelling, they looked at it and announced that it was caused by the name band which they then removed and walked off saying that will cure it (exact words).

When I returned later for the evening visiting, I noticed that the swelling was unchanged and still increasing. I again informed the member of staff, who checked it again and their exact words were, well it will have to stay that way until the next shift starts as she's too difficult for me to be bothered with, and walked away again.

My wife then had a blood disorder that left her in a zombie-like state and she didn't even get the dignity of a curtain round her unless a family member did it, she was left lying in a soiled bed and when this was mentioned to staff their reply was she's fine and we'll do it later.

A complaint form was done in March last year and sent into Aberdeen in the envelope provided, but I have never even had a reply to say that it was received or that it was being looked at, even though their own policy states 21 days for a response.

I did name the member of medical staff in my original complaint and worth noting that another member of staff gave me the forms and insisted that I completed it and send them in to help improve the situation that they were dealing with on that ward.

Dear Graham

I was extremely sorry to read about your wife's experience in Dr Gray's Hospital last year, and also to hear that you have not received any response to the feedback that you provided at the time. We have checked our records, both locally and with the NHS Grampian Feedback Service, for all complaints received in March-May 2024 and it appears that the feedback you provided at the time did not reach our Feedback team. I would be very grateful if you would contact the Feedback Service (details below) directly so that you can share the full detail of what happened whilst your wife was in our care, and we can investigate your concerns fully and take appropriate action.

I expect the staff in Dr Gray's to treat all our patients with dignity and respect at all times, and the care that your wife received clearly fell short of those expectations. I will ensure that the feedback you have posted on Care Opinion is shared with staff across the hospital, to help them to understand the impact that it has on patients and their families when the expected high standards of care are not provided.

Please accept my sincere apologies, and I hope that you will consider giving us the opportunity to investigate and respond in more detail to your concerns.
