"Poor care, no response to complaints and an unsafe discharge"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / General surgery Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Intensive care unit

(as a carer),

Our Dad was taken in for emergency surgery in July to FVRH. After a long illness and a failure to diagnose the issue despite several tests and GP referrals it was a shock for all of us. Initial care in the ICU was fantastic, they listened to him and accommodated his needs as much as they could in that environment. From the nurses to the consultant, they were caring, calm and professional.

He was then moved to B11 and it was one incident after another. He had two bad falls - one where he was left untreated with wounds on his head and elbow - both due to faulty equipment. Despite being under the care of dietitians he wasn’t weighed for over 10 days and only when we raised concerns about significant weight loss was action taken, which resulted in him being tube fed.

He was on a ward with 4 bays, which had a 5th contingency bed every day of the six weeks he was there. The nursing staff are stretched, patients can wait for an hour having pushed their help button.

We were not involved in our Dad’s discharge, despite one of us being his registered carer. We have made four detailed complaints with multiple issues, none of which have been responded to. He was discharged to another hospital to await a package of care. We raised multiple concerns in particular his fall risk, the community hospital has confirmed it was an unsafe discharge and raised the issue back to FVRH.

Dear violetsy43

Thank you for taking the time to share with us your dad’s journey of care whilst in Forth Valley Royal Hospital. May I take this opportunity to apologise for your dad’s experience and for any distress this may have caused.

It is always difficult for our staff to hear that we have not met the needs and expectations of our patients, it is never our intention to cause any additional stress or concern. We would really like to be given the opportunity to look into your concerns and to do this, we require some further information. Can I ask you to contact Mrs Louise Boyle, Head of Nursing, Emergency and Inpatient Care on 01324 566764, or by e-mail louise.boyle@nhs.scot who will be able to support.

We really appreciate your kind words regarding the care your dad received in ICU and I know staff will appreciate your thoughtfulness about the care they provided.

I hope this is helpful.

Kind Regards

Caroline
