"Treated her with care and compassion"

About: Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital / Ash Villa

(as a relative),

My mummy was admitted to the Ash Ward in Omagh, the admission made us as a family feel so many different emotions. This is not something we ever have wished for, however since mummy was admitted we can report that we have seen a very positive change in mummy.

The care provided by the dementia companions (Donna, Jade & Mairead) and nurses is amazing. Mummy has settled well and been taken out for walks and a trip to a local coffee shop. This has helped lift mummy’s mood and stimulate her in a more mindfulness positive way.

We can say as a family the care and attention that has been gave to mummy has helped us as a family regain a piece of the person we felt we had lost. It’s so comforting to get this version of our mummy that we have not seen in some time.

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has crossed paths with mummy and treated her with care and compassion. Keep up the good work and know that everyday your kindness doesn’t go unseen. Thank you!

Dear Reassured Relative 1

My name is Nicola Hayes and I am the Dementia Service Improvement Lead for Hospitals and I manage the Dementia Companion Service.

Thank you for sharing your feedback story – “Treated her with care and compassion” and thank you for taking the time, particularly when your Mummy may not be at her best health and in hospital.

Coming into hospital can be a fearful time for any of us, never mind for someone living with dementia, as in your Mummy’s case and for you as a family. It is great to hear the positive impact that the Dementia Companions are having with the care they are providing.

The care and treatment provided is essential to ensure that any hospital journey is person centred, particularly with your Mummy’s health at this time. Providing that individualised care is what makes the Dementia Companion Service so special and I agree, Donna, Jade and Mairead do provide ‘amazing’ care. By providing care that is unique to an individual, it will make the environment less stressed and feared for your Mummy and allow her personality to shine through. It is great to read that this hasn’t gone unnoticed and this is the core of the Dementia Companion Service. I am delighted that you and your family are having the experience of the Dementia Companions and the role that they can play with people living with dementia who are admitted to our acute hospitals.

I will share your story with Donna, Jade and Mairead and they will be delighted to receive such positive feedback.

May I thank you again for taking the time to share your experiences with us on Care Opinion.

Your feedback is very welcome to ensure safe, effective, compassionate and well led care is delivered.

Best Wishes

Nicola
