"The care felt very disorganised"

About: Inverclyde Royal Hospital / Community Maternity Unit

(as the patient),

Throughout pregnancy, the care felt very disorganised. While individual staff were competent and courteous we did not feel reassured through our first pregnancy by the level of information we received.

We almost never saw our midwife and were cycled through others at each appointment. Test results were not published to the Badger app, even after we chased and were assured they would be. Phone calls were often not answered, or if they were, we were promised a callback that never happened. On one occasion we called about headache concerns, were told to expect a callback, never did, but two days later our GP called to tell us we'd been prescribed medicine for heartburn.

Appointment times were also not well organised, we've had conflicting times told to us in person, over the phone, and by text. On one occasion we had a morning appointment, but were only told the day before via text that we also had an afternoon appointment, which we then couldn't attend due to prior work commitments. Attended the morning appointment only to then be told we did not have an afternoon appointment despite calling the day before and it being confirmed.

We also tried on several occasions to discuss birth plans, every time we asked we were told they would discuss with us nearer the time. We were 35 weeks before a midwife actually agreed to discuss it with us, and she was shocked we hadn't already had the conversation. Options had been written down for us without discussion, and they differed from what we'd been told verbally. The actual conversation was good but we don't understand why everybody avoided it until that stage of the pregnancy.
