"Breast cancer surgery and a life saved"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Breast Clinic University Hospital Monklands / Pre Admission Assessment University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery West Scotland Breast Screening Centre

(as a service user),

My breast cancer was diagnosed in November 2025, following a breast scan. I was immediately called in for an ultrasound and a biopsy, which showed cancer, and in December I was referred to a specialist surgeon, Mr Balasubramanian, who recommended lumpectomy as soon as possible. I visited the three university hospitals in North Lanarkshire, at Wishaw, Monklands, and Hairmyres, where I had an array of procedures: pre-assessment, insertion of a magnetic seed, and insertion of a radioisotope.

I received excellent treatment in all hospitals. I was never in any pain and never felt lost or afraid. The staff were extremely polite and friendly, they helped me in every way possible and made me feel at ease. The hospitals were immaculately clean and very well organised. I only faced a few parking problems, which was to be expected.

Towards the end of January, about one month after visiting my surgeon, I had breast surgery at Wishaw hospital. The nurses were amazing, so helpful and caring. It was a heart-warming experience at such a difficult time. The surgeon, Mr Bala, explained the procedure to me, talked with me at length, and reassured me, as did the anaesthesiologist, who did a marvellous job indeed. The surgery went very well, I was never in any pain, and went home the same day. I started my physiotherapy today. The swelling is minimal, as is the pain, coming from two small, neat incisions. I feel better than ever.

I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart our NHS, the nurses, and my surgeon, Mr Balasubramanian, with his entire team, for everything they have done for me. Deeply grateful, you saved my life.

I have always trusted the NHS, now more than ever.

Sincerely,

A cancer survivor
