Following my surgery for Chiari malformation at DCN, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, I was admitted for nearly two months due to a post-surgical complication known as White Cord Syndrome. This led to significant swallowing difficulties along with other symptoms. During this time, I was treated by the Speech and Language Therapy team (SLT) led by Clare, Christina, and Racheal, who supported me with great compassion, empathy, and professionalism.
I was primarily overseen by Clare, who encouraged me to trust the process and remain patient with my recovery. When I first met the team, I felt demotivated by the slow pace of progress, particularly as I required NG tube feeding throughout November. However, through open and honest conversations and learning about the improvements seen in my second scan, I regained confidence in the recovery process and committed fully to the exercises prescribed by the team. Regular check-ins ensured I stayed on track throughout my hospital recovery.
After my discharge in mid-December, Sophie from the Community Speech and Language Therapy team took over my care. She continued to reassure me about the pace of my recovery, ensured I was meeting planned milestones, and tailored my exercises to better fit my daily routine. As I no longer had the same level of supervision as in hospital, she encouraged me to set reminders on my phone to help me stay consistent with the plan.
Fast forward two and a half months later, following my third scan, I was relieved and grateful to see that the sustained efforts had paid off, allowing me to return to a normal diet. I feel immense gratitude to both the hospital and community Speech and Language Therapy teams, as well as the dietitians, doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and support workers who played a vital role in my recovery. As I continue working towards full recovery from my remaining symptoms, I feel positive and encouraged by the progress made with their unwavering support.
"Appreciation for Exceptional Post-Surgical Care"
