"It was amazing to have a home visit"

About: Children, Young People and Families and Specialist Primary Care / Infant Feeding Worcestershire Royal Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

The infant feeding team contacted me after I mentioned to my midwife that I had some concerns about breastfeeding my newborn son. I had breastfed my eldest child but felt a bit out of practice as this was a few years ago. My newborn also appeared to have a small tongue tie, which my eldest child hadn't had. In that first week at home with a newborn when you're not ready to leave the house yet, it was amazing to have someone call me and offer a home visit the same day or the day after. I had already had helpful conversations with the midwives and they encouraged me to access the infant feeding team.

Seeing a specialist at home enabled me to share specific questions/concerns, show what I was doing and get advice, learn feeding techniques and ultimately have more confidence in my ability to breastfeed my baby. My advisor checked in with me by phone 3 days after her visit and has signposted me to breastfeeding groups I can access going forward. I would wholeheartedly recommend the infant feeding team to any new parent, regardless of whether feeding is going well or whether it is challenging. Contact with the team can only be beneficial as you navigate the journey of caring for a newborn.
