"Gallstones"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 2 (Emergency Surgical) Victoria Hospital / Out of Hours

(as the patient),

I rang NHS24 early Friday morning around 5am with severe abdominal pain and back pain. I got Colin on the phone he was lovely and spoke to my husband and then spoke to me. I had a brief chat with a nurse and was advised my local hospital would be in touch. The out of hours at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy phoned me and advised me to come down he suspected gallstones. The dr down there was lovely (sorry didnt get his name) definitely knew his stuff and just wanted to get my pain under control. After 45 mins waiting on medication taking effect i was still in pain although not as severe. He sent me round to admissions 2. Which i was dreading as I know how busy the hospital is and haven’t heard great things about admissions. I have to say they were so lovely in admissions 2. Lisa (i think was a health care support worker) who took us into the exam room to ask us questions and take blood. She was so nice and funny. I explained that its sometimes hard for people to get my blood but she got it first time. The nurses i came into contact with were so nice and down to earth such as Christine and sorry didn’t get the name of the others. There were a few uni students as well who took my obs and urine samples they were fab too. Anyway i managed to get an ultrasound and MRI scan within the 12 hours i was there and the initial dr was correct it was gallstones. Which i am on the urgent list to get my gallbladder out.

I would just like to thank all the staff that were involved with my care. I know due to the current challenging times within the NHS every day can be overwhelming and tough but you really made a difference to me that day. THANK YOU!!

I am glad that your experience has been a positive one all roundand we provided such good care.

I will pass this on the staff in AU2, they will be happy to hear that they have made a difference during a challenging Winter period.

I hope you are recovering well at home.

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your recent visit to the Out‑of‑Hours Service at Victoria Hospital. I’m very pleased to hear that our clinician provided compassionate, effective care and worked quickly to manage your pain during what must have been an extremely distressing time for you.

Your positive comments mean a great deal to the team, and I will make sure your appreciation is passed on. Our staff work hard to provide safe, person‑centred care despite ongoing pressures, and it’s encouraging to know that this was reflected in your experience.

Thank you again for taking the time to acknowledge the service. I wish you all the best with your continued care and upcoming treatment.

Best Wishes

Fran

I was sorry to learn you had cause to contact 111 due to being in such pain and that you have since been diagnosed with gallstones. I am sure this must have been a very worrying time for you and I do hope you are doing well.

It is great to hear that NHS 24 contributed to your positive patient journey and arranged your onward care via your local Health Board, NHS Fife.

If you wish to share some further information with me, I can locate the NHS 24 staff you spoke with and share your Care Opinion story with them. We strive to ensure that our staff receive any positive feedback, to remind them how much their care is valued by those who use our services. I am sure that Colin would be delighted to hear your kind words.

You can contact me by email at Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk. If you do get in touch, please kindly include your Care Opinion username in your email.
