"Concern over A & E diagnosis"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency Antrim Area Hospital / Endoscopy Suite

(as the patient),

In the January I was very ill vomiting blood. I called the emergency services and was taken to the A & E department. After 13 hours I was seen by a junior doctor who told me it was nothing to worry about and was probably due to low blood pressure, and sent me home.

Two day's later I told my GP what had happened and he was appalled that there was no further investigation and he referred me back to the hospital for an Endoscopy.

I had the Endoscopy yesterday and they have found a growth which is likely cancer.

My concern is that this junior doctor just dismissed me and I think that that is dangerous.

I don't know their name and they did not put their name on the report on the MyCare system.

The Endoscopy staff were brilliant and deserve praise.

Dear herculesee65

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am very sorry for the distress you have been through, especially now that your recent endoscopy has identified a concerning growth. I also appreciate how worrying it must have been to feel dismissed during your Emergency Department visit.

Vomiting blood should always be taken seriously, and it is clear that aspects of your care fell below the standard we aim to provide. Your concerns about the delay, the assessment you received, and the lack of clinician identification are fully acknowledged.

If you would like us to formally investigate your ED attendance and discuss further the issues you have raised, please contact me

Kind regards,

Cathy McCoy
