"Feedback on the sensory preference module"

About: Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Adult Mental Health / Autism & ADHD Pathway

(as a service user),

The OT team have been wonderful. However, I have found this module a lot more confusing and stressful than than the first module. I thought it might be worth mentioning that in one session we seemed to be told that we should seek medical help if our heart was still beating fast after a few deep breaths , even if we were stressed. I did query this in the session, but as the OT's didn't obviously backtrack on this advice ( despite adding that heart rate slowing down can take different lengths of time for different people) the next time when this happened ( the next morning) I felt the need to contact 111. Fortunately, my GP has now clarified I don't need to worry if it seems to be within my normal anxiety pattern. However, I am unclear whether the OTs intended me to take this course of action.

Dear Donkey42,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about this module, we really appreciate it. We’re really glad to hear you liked working with the OT team.

We talked a lot in the module about interoception (the sense of what is happening in your body), including about awareness of your own heartbeat. I’m really sorry to read that this was a source of confusion and stress for you. It is a complex topic, and because we are Occupational Therapists and not medics we always want to err on the side of caution when talking about things like heart rate, pain and so on. We would not want to give you incorrect medical advice, so I’m pleased that your GP was able to confirm there was nothing to worry about.

We will review the way we phrase this topic for the next time we run the module, and see if there is a clearer way we can communicate. We would love to have your input on this, so please do email us using the email address you normally contact us on, and let us know if you have any ideas.

Thanks again for your feedback,

Elly
