"Ultrasound delays"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care Perth Royal Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as the patient),

I am pregnant expecting my second child and there are delays of at least three weeks for ultrasound scans at Ninewells/PRI. My 12-week scan took place at 15 weeks and I am now 23 weeks and still have not had an appointment for my 20-week scan. This is despite the fact that I was told by the sonographer that I would be a priority as I have a synechiae in my womb. The ongoing delays are causing me both anxiety and stress.

The ultrasound department also are unreliable and averse in picking up the phone, and until recently the line would just go dead (now there is a message saying the times the phones a allegedly manned... they are not manned during these times as I have called multiple times and no one picks up).

Every time I call and someone does pick up I am told I am on the list. At no point has anyone apologised or explained what is going on - I know from my community midwife that there are staff shortages due to maternity leave and sick leave of staff at PRI, I do not know if they are under-staffed at Ninewells but I expect so as more recently on the phone they have said - we now have more staff on.

The 20-week scan is an important anomaly scan which takes place at that time for a reason, the gov.uk website states that the screening pathway must be completed by 23+0 weeks - I am now beyond that, so what does that mean for me and my baby? What if there is something wrong with my baby that could have been picked up earlier? This is a serious failure by NHS Tayside who have completely failed in their duty of care to me and my baby.

We sincerely apologise for the distress and anxiety caused by the current challenges within our Obstetric ultrasound department in NHS Tayside.

As a senior leadership team, we are actively advancing sustainable workforce planning within Obstetric ultrasound, aligned to the Health Improvement Scotland safer staffing legislation.

Over recent months we have experienced both anticipated and unforeseen workforce availability challenges. In response, we have and continue to take steps to expand the sonography workforce.

Our waiting lists are reviewed daily and prioritised by specialist clinicians to allocate scans based on clinical indication.

We are aware that some scans may be performed out with national guidance, we will ensure that appropriate support and alternative care options are given to all individuals following their scan.

Where any 1st trimester pregnancy screening delay is directly influenced by our service provision, women will be offered an appropriate alternative screening option in the form of a blood test known as a Non-Invasive Perinatal Testing (NIPT).

We understand the anxiety these delays are causing for families in Tayside. We are taking these current challenges very seriously and have ensured that the appropriate levels of our leadership structure are fully informed and engaged to support urgent and sustainable solutions.

To improve access to our service we have opened up more phone lines to ensure patients can gain the information.

The phone lines are as follows regardless of where your scan is due to be, please use all lines as they will be able to access the information regarding your scan position

Perth - Ext 13270 Phone number 01738 473270
Arbroath - Ext 21236 Phone number 01241 822536
