"The staff truly made a difference to my care"

About: Victoria Hospital / Admissions Unit 2 (Emergency Surgical)

(as a service user),

Although my experience wasn’t wholly positive due to the length of time I waited for a CT scan and the hours spent sitting in a chair in significant pain with suspected appendicitis (which was later confirmed and removed), I would still like to commend the staff who truly made a difference to my care and overall stay on AU2 VHK.

Doctor Rowyn (I’m unsure of her surname) was first class, professional, compassionate and very accurate with her diagnosis. I could see that behind the scenes she was doing her best to help move things along, including trying to secure a bed and arrange the CT scan more quickly.

Staff Nurse Bobbie cared for me overnight and was excellent. She was professional, friendly and nothing ever seemed like too much trouble. She made sure I was as comfortable as possible and is a real credit to the profession.

One area that could have been better was communication with my surgeon. I felt that my concerns about the level of pain I was in weren’t fully heard, and there seemed to be quite a delay before imaging was arranged. I do understand that there are processes and pressures within the hospital system, but as a Type 1 diabetic in severe pain it felt like the scan might have been prioritised sooner.

That said, I am grateful for the care I received, for the surgery to remove my appendix, and that I am now on the road to recovery.
