"Having MS but still enjoying life!"

About: Orthopaedic Outpatients / Tayside Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Technology (TORT)

(as a service user),

I have Multiple Sclerosis. I was diagnosed several years ago and as condition has progressed, I feel my world has become smaller. Almost everything has had to change, mainly how I regard myself. There are many things I enjoyed, chose to do and needed in my life that became too difficult. Running, driving, spending time with friends and most importantly riding and being with my horse.

Avoiding depression became a 24/7 battle. At present, my left arm and hand is the only part of me that works in the way my brain tells it to.

I had numerous appointments with the TORT and neurology over the years, eventually MS overtook me and my life revolved around  my tiny flat and “what I couldn’t do”!

Then. Louise and Alison from Tayside Orthopaedic Rehabilitation services helped me in ways I couldn’t imagine. They brought an electric wheelchair for me to try. It was great, however I wasn’t ready and my brain wasn’t in “the right place”. It was much too intense and inclined to ignore risks, eg Speed of vehicles and safety of pedestrians. I suppose I failed my driving test!

After a short period they let me try again and this time I passed!!

Louise brought the ordered chair and we practised some more inside my flat ( which isnt wheelchair adapted) and outside. She also took me on public transport and trained me how to have confidence and travel.

The TORT and the staff have literally changed my life. Their patience and knowledge has helped me feel I am now part of the life I had again. I travel, spend time with friends and family and most of all I spend time with my horse. I still have Multiple sclerosis BUT enjoying life.
