I reached out for help during a very vulnerable time when I was trying to process trauma and make sense of my experiences as a neurodivergent person. Instead of feeling understood, I often felt misunderstood, dismissed, and labelled in ways that didn’t reflect what I was actually going through.
There seemed to be a lack of understanding around neurodivergence, particularly how trauma, communication, and emotional responses can present differently. My way of expressing myself and processing things was often misinterpreted, which led to me feeling judged rather than supported.
When I tried to explain my experiences, the focus quickly shifted towards medication instead of taking the time to understand me as an individual. I didn’t feel safe to speak openly because I was worried about being labelled or sectioned again. This made it very difficult to build trust with professionals involved in my care.
As a result, I felt unheard, unsupported, and at times powerless. My lived experience and insight were not valued, and I was left feeling stuck rather than helped to move forward. This has had a lasting impact on both my mental and physical health, as I ended up neglecting my own health needs while trying to navigate the system.
What I needed was understanding, patience, and a neurodivergent-informed approach—where communication differences are recognised and respected, and where people are listened to without judgement.
