"Diabetes care has always been really good"

My mum has been coming to Kings for a long while since her diagnosis with diabetes 14 years ago and her diabetes care has always been really good. When she came to Kings, she was referred to some classes to help her understand about the condition and also how to manage it. These were really good and really helped her to understand how to manage her diet, information about different foods and blood sugar levels.

This really increased my mums confidence and has been really reassuring so that mostly her levels have been better controlled so that there have not been much urgent care needed.

Her eyes are checked regularly and she really appreciates that but one thing was that she was discharged from foot clinic recently and did not understand why. When we raised this during her recent inpatients stay she was rereferred which was great.

Her GP is also really supportive and regularly checks her levels and this is really good because anecdotally she knows some of her friends with the same condition do not get the same level of support from their practice.

Just also to say that her diabetes care was far better than the care she had on the general medical ward when she came in for osteomyelitis. It all felt bureaucratic and not very joined up. There was a line in for her drugs that was left unflushed and also a mix up with drugs where she was prescribed co-codamol and paracetomol at the same time. Good job we as a family spotted this.
