"My daughter is struggling and needs inpatient care"

About: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) / Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services – Inpatient

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has had excellent care throughout the past 18months, under the tier 3 team at Thorneywood.

Unfortunately her condition has deteriorated considerably during the past two months and we've been told that tier 4 inpatient care is the only way forward.

We met with the fantastic inpatient psychiatrist last week who showed me around the unit. I was very impressed with the facilities and standard of care. I was however extremely saddened to learn that the unit is not at full capacity (10 beds taken out of 12 available). This is because there are not enough highly trained staff available.

I cannot begin to describe how utterly heartbreaking it is to be told this and to have no idea how long we may have to wait. My daughter is struggling enormously and this is obviously having a huge impact on our family as a whole.

As every day goes by I just feel more desperate and increasingly angry that my beautiful daughter cannot get the help she so badly needs. We cannot wait until she deteriorates further. I remain hopeful that a place will become available very soon before it is too late.

I am very sorry to hear that your daughters health has deteriorated, this must be a very difficult time for you all.

We are doing a lot of work to try & increase the number of experienced staff on the in patient unit so that we can seek to open the remaining 2 beds. We have some excellent nurses on the unit already and I am pleased that you were impressed with the facilities and standards of care that we offer.

If you wish to discuss your daughters care further then please do get in touch with the tier 3 CAMHS team that are looking after her.

Update posted by Nurture (a parent/guardian)

It would be helpful and hopefully reassuring if we could have an idea of the timescale here. How long before you will have the unit fully staffed?

I've been told that my daughter will have to wait 'weeks'. Does this mean less than a month or much longer? Nothing can be done for her in terms of therapy until she has made significant weight gain. The delay in tier 4 inpatient care is therefore having a massive impact on her recovery.

We have an experienced qualified nurse coming to work on the unit starting this week and we have also appointed a second experienced qualified nurse who, subject to pre-employment checks, should be in post within 4 - 6 weeks. We will then be in a position to review the number of beds available.

If you would like to discuss this further then please do contact your daughters tier 3 worker who can offer further advice & support.

Kind Regards
