Attended 6 week postpartum checks for both baby and myself (mother) at the Calderside practice of Blantyre Health Centre. We were taken 20 minutes late for the first appointment which meant they overlapped one another, fortunately(? ) they were still able to see us both.
Mothers postpartum check was very brief. As a first time mother I had one or two questions about my body and how I should be recovering. I asked and was told "It should be fine. " or "Hmm yes, just go ahead. " to all of my queries. No helpful information, no further investigation or treatment.
Baby's check up was very much the same, very brief. Again as a first time mother I had some worries as my baby has been periodically unwell. The GP asked how baby has been and as I started to explain I was told "Listen I'm just here to do a physical check, it should just go away in a while, probably an age thing. " This is difficult to hear when you have a baby who cries in pain most of the day.
As you can imagine this was very frustrating. I now have to attend a different clinic for answers which ultimately means another stressful trip out of the house with a very young baby. That, and being left with a feeling of unimportance. Not nice at such an emotional time.
"More support needed at postpartum check for mother and baby"
