I have lifelong asthma which is set off by a range of allergies particularly to cats. Like I suspect of lot of men, I am not good at engaging with health professionals who might have something to say about how this long term condition is managed. In the last couple of years I have managed my asthma much better and surprise surprise this has had an impact on my quality of life.
This has come about from the active engagement by Broomhill GP surgery who gently insisted on me having regular reviews with the practice nurse. Both the ones I have seen have adopted just the right approach, caring but assertive in an acceptable slightly bossy fashion. The result is that I take my medication more regularly and in a more effective manner. They convinced me to use the preventative one the Brown Becotide so that I use Ventolin much less and cope with occasional breathlessness. They also got me to use strategies when going into situations which I knew would be a challenge to my condition.
I get my asthma medication from the chemist who pick it up from the GP. Occasionally there is a note to say I need to go for a review before my next lot of prescription. Again in terms of engaging with folk like me who work full time and have busy lives its a good way of keeping tabs on us slightly reluctant patients.
As well as steering a way clear from our feline friends (what's the point of cats anyway?) I will toe the line with my asthma reviews.
