"The quality of the service has been exemplary"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Cardiology University Hospital Hairmyres / General Medicine (Wards 9-12)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Hairmyres Hospital in the early hours one day in July having suffered a heart attack.

The quality of service I received from the moment I arrived until my departure I can only describe as exemplary so much so that the negative complaints and comments I have read about the NHS and the service it provides has left me bewildered.

I spent almost a week in Hairmyres I was seen every day by a consultant, the cardiology surgeon prior to having a stent fitted and during the operation. The nursing staff were absolutely excellent, easy to talk to, and they explained everything they were doing as they went along and why, which really impressed me. “We just need to make sure. . . “, “I’m just checking your. . . because. . . “ it was very comforting and very reassuring.

The area of the ward I was in was cleaned meticulously to a level where I ended up thinking that the staff doing the cleaning had OCD! It was daily and in some cases more, highly commendable.

I feel embarrassed to say that I met so many staff that I cannot remember all the names; however I would like to thank you all.

I am now in rehab physio. I am in week three of eight and it is excellent. It’s a program to get you back to basics as far as getting yourself back to ‘normal’; however I have learned that you have to listen to what you are told (thanks Faye and Mary)! The classes start off easy and gradually build up over time; it’s a good laugh with the staff and other patients too, it’s a must!

It would be remiss of me not to mention the staff who deliver the breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, they were absolutely lovely, I didn’t get to know any of them by name, however I recall they were always happy and cheery. Also, not to forget the voluntary workers who came round every day with newspapers, biscuits, sweets, etc. thank you.

During my stay at Hairmyres I was treated with upmost dignity and respect. I never thought that having to be in hospital would have been like this, thank you for fixing me.

Dear JTW,

I’m really pleased to hear of your experience with us at Hairmyres. You’ve mentioned a number of the different staff groups that you came into contact with and there are many more working hard behind the scenes.

We know the importance of person-centred care, and we aim to provide this level of care for all our patients. You’ve also mentioned the support staff and the cleanliness of the hospital, again this is a really important aspect of hospital routines that is taken very seriously by all staff groups, I’m pleased you noticed the diligence of staff in this area.

You seem to have established a good rapport with all of the staff you met and it sounds like you remained in good spirits throughout your stay; you’ve certainly brought a smile to my face. It will be my pleasure to share your feedback with staff throughout the hospital as an example of how we want to do things and the positive impact for patients and their families when we get it right.

I wish you well with your continuing rehab programme.

Kindest regards

Susan
