"I feel this is a real testament to the NHS"

About: University Hospital Monklands / General Medicine (Wards 2,10,12 and 17)

(as the patient),

Towards the latter half of 2015, I started to experience extreme thirst, weight loss and lethargy. Following a routine appointment with my doctor, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and transferred to the Medical Receiving Unit in Monkland's Hospital. Given the varied admissions that the staff absorb within this unit, I found the staff were informative, caring and gave me adequate time to brief me on my new illness. I gave blood samples to ensure I was not suffering from ketoacidosis, seen by a Diabetic Nurse specialist, given insulin, a crash course on the illness and, relevant equipment to take home with me. I also was given an appointment with the Diabetic Nurses the next day - and sent on a carbohydrate counting course only two days after that.

From being severely ill at 10. 30am on the Monday morning, I had been seen and received treatment and discharged with appropriate care by late afternoon of the same day and by the end of the week I had been given all appropriate treatment to manage the illness and improve my health. I feel this is a real testament to the NHS Service that in less than a week I went from unwell to a point that I had been diagnosed and already had started to get back to a degree of normality and good health.

I would like to thank all at the Emergency Receiving Unit, and the continued support of the fantastic Diabetic Nurse's at the David Matthew's Centre (both located at Monkland's Hospital) for all of their help.
