"Excellent staff of Ward 6 Hairmyres Hospital"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as a relative),

My 89 year old father was admitted to Hairmyres and diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer which had spread to other organs. He was given a side room in Ward 6 where he received what I can only say was the most wonderful, compassionate, professional care during the two weeks he spent there.

Many people were involved in his care but there was a team of nurses who worked with him and ensured he was well looked after, but alongside them the Nursing Assistants were wonderful in their care also. The Ward Hostesses could not have been nicer and were very attentive to my dad - who was unable to eat - and to our family.

During the last year, my dad also received care and home visits from the Heart Failure Nurse and I extend my thanks to her for all her help.

The whole staff provided excellent care to my dad and to my brothers and me. We were allowed to stay with him day and night during his final days and when he died, he did so with dignity and peace.

Praise must also go to the Palliative Nurse who cared so well for my dad to ensure he was pain free and she spoke at length with us always with great patience and understanding.

In a time when the NHS receive bad publicity, I think it is only right that the nursing staff should receive the praise they deserve - and for the staff of Ward 6 Hairmyres Hospital, this needs to happen. They were wonderful and I thank them for everything they did for us.

I hope they are aware of this email and that they know who the patient was to ensure they know how highly we think of them

Dear Kinghorn,

Firstly can I give you our heartfelt condolences for your loss and that of the family, losing a parent (no matter what age) is always a horrible time in life.

I want to thank you for taking the time to acknowledge the compassionate care we all try to give and especially to those staff you have mentioned. I'm meeting with the Senior Charge Nurse of Ward 6 later today and I will ensure a copy of your e mail will be displayed for all the ward staff to see.

I'll also ensure that this is shared with our Palliative care nurse and my colleagues from the Cardiac service.

I wish you and the family my sympathies at this difficult time and again thank you all for acknowledging the valuable work all our teams do.

Kind Regards

Gwen
