Nearly a decade ago my Father was admitted to Lewis/Iona Ward with Dementia. In the time he was resident the care given to him and his family members including me, was exceptional and humbling. The team of 12 Psychiatric nurses, 14 nursing assistants, Consultants, housekeepers, chefs (everyone who made up the team) went above and beyond every level of care we could have hoped for.
These people work flawlessly together offering an instinctive love and care for each patient they look after. They very quickly get to know their patients and build solid, trusting relationships.
As a visitor, we were always cared for. Over the years we shared the joy of team members weddings and births and were made to feel incredibly welcome. My three very young children thoroughly enjoyed visiting. They played in the garden or chatted to other patients and I’m sure enjoyed the odd chocolate biscuit.
To have the opportunity to gather together as a family in the last days, to be made so comfortable and welcome, was very humbling indeed.
This ward is humanity at its very best. It is the kindness, excellent management and friendship of a group of more than 30 people who give dignity to patients and families. I will always be grateful.
