My husband (Who suffers from mobility problems) was attending Epsom hospital today for a pre op assessment. While there he mentioned that he had fallen down the dtairs the previous week and that although xrays had shown no breaks his hand was now extremely swollen and he was unable to use it. The pre op team said that, as he was already at the hospital, he should go round to A&E to get it seen to as his operation might need to be cancelled. By having it done there they would have immediate access to his records and would be able to see if it should be cancelled or not.
Having got there around 1230 he was triaged an hour later and finally told he could go at 4:45, At this point he was told off by the staff who said he shouldn't have come to them he should have gone back to St George's where he was initially taken following his accident. He explained that the pre-op team had told him to go round to their A&E but they didn't care.
I appreciate that going between hospitals is not ideal but a) he was already at that hospital and b) he was told to go there by the other team.
I think that staff might need to take some guidance in terms of compassion and respect for vulnerable people in these circumstance.
"Told he should go back to where he was initially taken"
