"Very disappointing wait times"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Emergency department

Visited Altnagelvin A&E last night after 8pm, was triaged and had bloods done by 9.20pm. Then I waited and waited and waited before asking reception at 0130am how far down the list I was, to find out I was still 17th on the list which of course could become lower depending on what came in between then and my time to be seen.

An elderly person had been sitting alone for nearly 9 hours, had nothing to eat or drink and mentioned they were diabetic which I feel is absolutely appalling. A mother and her son had also been sitting for 9hrs before being called to see a doctor.

Very disappointing wait times, no updates given on waiting, vending machines out of order and no water/tea/coffee offered especially to the vulnerable. Poor showing for the NHS.

Thank-you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I am so sorry to hear you had a negative experience while attending our department, unfortunately last night was an extremely busy night in which we had patients waiting for much longer than we would like. I apologise that you were not kept informed about the waiting times, we do strive to communicate with our patients regarding the waiting times as accurately as possible, and patients can approach the reception desk, as I note that you did, if they have any enquiries, and our triage nurses are available to speak to regarding any further information you may require while waiting. I will provide feedback to our staff to ask that we communicate more effectively with regard to the waiting times.

I have phoned Coca-Cola, the company who supply and maintain our vending machines, to ask that a member of staff comes out to check that these machines are in full working order, thank-you for bringing this issue to my attention.
