Gwen,
Memory Lane was opened on the 27th March 2017 as an activity dementia friendly room which is based in the dayroom between Ward 13 and Ward 14 at University Hospital Hairmyres. Carol McKechnie (activities coordinator) plans and assists older adults who have a diagnosis of cognitive impairment.
Memory Lane is open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday. A daily breakfast and lunch club helps patients who require nutritional support. A social setting is used to support and encourage eating and drinking which staff are able to monitor, or provide additional support to ensure dietary requirements are met.
Memory Lane encourages visits from the Therapet Team (Fred & Tilly):
Other activities include exercise classes (gentle!!), High Teas, pamper sessions and interactive games. Discussion groups which feature the use of Memory boxes & reminiscence time along with seasonal arts and crafts work.
The patients have regular visits from the local Kirktoholme nursery school pupils and recent visits from the 6th EK Beavers who helped patients Thomas and Margaret with Easter activities and delivered memory boxes for discussion.
