"Two simple things could have been better at Wexham Park A&E"

About: Wexham Park Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

Halfway through a 3 hour wait, I was thirsty and as there wasn't any water I put £1. 50 into the drinks machine but nothing came out. The reception staff tried to help but couldn't sort out the machine so I had a long thirsty wait to be seen.

I do not think the doctor who examined my face had washed his hands as they didn't smell too good!

Two simple things which don't require any qualifications to organise - there surely should be water in A & E and there should be a notice about doctors washing their hands or putting on gloves in front of patients!

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback. I am sorry that you felt the doctor had not washed his hands before examining you. I will pass your feeedback onto Dr Nick Jenkins, Clinical Lead for Emergency Medicine to share with the team. Handwashing practice is taken very seriously within the Trust and is included in induction for new staff and on mandatory training. Posters regarding hand washing are also displayed for staff in the hospital.

I am also sorry that you were unable to access water during your wait to see the doctor. I will be asking Mark Johnston-Wood, Director of Estates and Facilities to review the options for access to water in the waiting area. This suggestion was also made by Healthwatch Bracknell Forest who visited our A&E department on Saturday 5th April.

Thank you again for your comments

Dear Geranium

Just to update you on progress

- The drinks machine is now working in reception

- The Estates team are looking at the different options for access to free water in reception

- Dr Jenkins has spoken with all of the team regarding handwashing

Would you be able to contact me please on claire.marshall@hwph-tr.nhs.uk with your details as Dr Jenkins would like to be able to talk specifically to the doctor who examined you?

Many thanks
