"Child assessment unit"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a relative),

My grandson in A&E all night, brought to CAU around 10:00.  My husband and I arrived to swap with my daughter & partner as they’d been up all night.  While this swap over was taking place in CAU a staff member arrived at the door, didn't introduce themselves, and rudely said only two were people allowed at the bed. I explained we were swapping over carers  and they walked away. Less than 30 seconds later another staff member arrived, again no introduction, no concern to welfare for my grandson, and said exactly the same thing. Again I reiterated we were swapping carers as my daughter had been in A&E all night.

I found all this very upsetting, slightly embarrassing  and really not necessary, we had no intention of all of us staying. However, another member of staff saved the experience, as they  introduced themselves, spoke in an acceptable voice to my grandson and to us and was sympathetic to our concerns.

They were a credit to the unit.
