I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with the lack of compassion I experienced from the nursing staff during my recent visit. After suffering a concussion, I was in a vulnerable and distressed state, experiencing significant pain and visual disturbances. When a nurse attempted to shine a light in my eyes, I informed them that the light was causing me extreme discomfort, making me see floaters, and bringing me to tears.
Instead of responding with understanding or concern, the nurse dismissively remarked that I had my eyes open a few minutes ago. This statement was not only inaccurate, as I had kept my eyes covered the entire time to mitigate the pain, but it also displayed a troubling lack of empathy.
Subsequent medical evaluation revealed that I had a torn retina, underscoring the seriousness of my condition and the inappropriate nature of the nurse’s response. As a patient, I felt reduced to just a number rather than a person in need of compassionate care. This experience has left me feeling deeply unhappy with the treatment I received.
On a positive note, I would like to commend the doctor who attended to me afterwards. He showed genuine compassion by placing me in a dark room to alleviate my discomfort and checking in on me regularly. This contrast in care highlights that compassion can be shown by anyone within the healthcare team. While I deeply appreciated the doctor’s empathetic approach, the lack of empathy from the nurse was disappointing and concerning.
I hope that by sharing my story, steps will be taken to ensure that future patients are met with the kindness and consideration that everyone deserves, especially in times of medical distress.
