In May 24 I fell backwards down a few stairs on our main staircase in our home. My husband went next door to call a recently retired GP in our practice who advised phoning for an ambulance to Yeovil District Hospital.
I had concussion and bleeding in the brain and spent a week+ in the ICU before being transferred to a small general ward for head injuries.
After about 4 weeks I was transferred to the Dene Barton Hospital for help from physios and occupational therapists. I found the speech and communication therapist was most helpful in going through with me lots of written and verbal work.
All the staff seemed a great team and communicated well with me. The catering for our needs was excellent and I thought the food was a very high standard and enjoyable. The small garden was a great bonus for many of us and when receiving visitors we could entertain them outside.
I was discharged at the end of August to come home and was brought home with two professionals who permitted me to have a 4-wheeler push chair and a Zimmer with front wheels and they set up a board across our bath so that I can comfortably sit on this while managing a shower.
I also have a two-tier trolley and a high chair for use in the kitchen to move around or to sit and prepare food. I am becoming more independent to move between small areas using two walking sticks. I have also been to West Bay and Lyme Regis to walk along the promenade with two sticks.
I feel good about being home, but my feelings go up and down and I do find most activities very tiring and need to rest or sleep afterwards.
"My gratitude for such personal care and good humour"
