"A&E waiting time"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had been to the GP as he was having heart palpitations and a fast heart rate he was sent to the hospital by his doctor we arrived in the afternoon, he seen in triage around shortly after arrival, the following morning he still hasn't been seen by a doctor and he was still complaining about palpitations.

Something needs to change at this hospital especially someone coming in with heart complaint

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience of the Emergency department at Craigavon Area Hospital. The emergency department continues to be overcrowded with excess patients waiting to be admitted to a ward. Unfortunately this overcrowding means there is very limited capacity for the doctors to see and assess new patients meaning the waiting time can be very long. We have made a change to our allocation of staff so that we have a staff member allocated to the waiting room to complete observations, administer medications when required and answer general questions.

The triage nurse uses the Manchester triage system to prioritize patients presenting to the department. The triage nurse also requests for investigations to be completed. In your sons case both bloods and and ECG (heart tracing) would have been completed. The ECG is reviewed immediately after it is taking by a doctor to ensure patient is not having an acute cardiac event which needs urgent attention. This does not rule out a cardiac cause for the presentation.

I hope your son got seen by a doctor and is recovering well.

Stacey
