Referred to Urgent care by my GP following not responding to antibiotic treatment for whooping cough, increasingly SOB on minimal exertion. After waiting 30 minutes to have my BP/02 levels checked, I was asked to walk down to the other end of the building. The HCA on duty asked why I was breathing so heavily and explained the situation. Made her aware that I was light headed and had palpations from the walking. My heart rate was >120. Had documented my breathing rate was 16 (when I wasn't able to complete sentences and I had just walked) I was asked to go back to the waiting from again, waited another 20 mins to then be asked to walk back down to the same room to get an ECG done as my HR was so high (due to all the walking and being out of breath).
I then was seen by a DR who introduced himself, stated they were unsure what my GP wanted them to do with me because this isn't urgent if you have already been unwell. I explain that I was getting worse etc still unable to talk in full sentences due to being asked to walk so far several times. The DR then asked if I have a history of anxiety because that could explain my symptoms. I said I didn't understand how this is relevant to my presenting complaint.
Bloods were then taken and after a very rude phone call to talk through my results. I was made aware had a very low electrolyte that also required replacing. My option was to be referred back to my GP or A&E. If I was referred back to my GP the Urgent care DRs recommendations of a CT Chest, respiratory opinion and a 24hr tape were not going to be communicated to them...so how was I supposed to receive the care I needed??
I decided A&E would be the most appropriate option where I received steroids' and inhalers in a timely fashion. Due to me attending A&E to receive those medications, Urgent Care then refused to fulfil their promise of writing a prescription to replace the electrolyte. Thankfully, A&E were more that accommodating to fulfill the prescription otherwise I would have been discharged without it being replaced, leading to further complications to my health.
