"Rude senior nurse"

About: Frome Community Hospital

My 82 year old dad who has dementia and lots of health issues sliced through the top of his thumb whilst preparing dinner so I took him to Frome A&E. He is on blood thinners so we could not stop the bleeding. We were seen by a lovely young nurse but as the bleeding would not stop she couldn’t glue or steri strip it so went to seek advice. She can back with a senior nurse (NurseTeresa I think) who entered the room and immediately said to me ‘well to start I wouldn’t have you sat on the bed and actually I wouldn’t have you in the room. I only need to see the patient as too many people makes the room hot and busy’. She approached my dad and asked him what he had done and that was the only time she spoke to him. The rest of the time she was addressing the young nurse telling her what to do. She said ‘it’s only a cut, not an open wound, so dress it, keep it elevated for the day and bleeding will hopefully stop, they can remove dressing Friday and put a plaster on it’. Then she left the room. I used to work in the NHS so am acutely aware of the abuse and rudeness towards them on a daily basis and understand why they have zero tolerance posters everywhere. However it works both ways. There was absolutely no need for her comments and as my dad has dementia he needs have someone with him at all times. The information he was given on how to look after the wound was forgotten by the time he left the room. Unfortunately staff like this do not help other NHS staff who are all doing an amazing job. Her comments were unnecessary and unhelpful.
