In March 2024 following a bout of pneumonia, a routine blood test revealed that I was also suffering from Autoimmune Haemolytic Anaemia. What on earth is this?
Very rapid referral took place to a consultant Haematologist, Dr Tsoutsoukis, at Lincoln Hospital and treatment started immediately.
First plan of attack, treatment with steroids, whilst working, is not a sound long term option and can be subject to reversals - I'm told. Thus, Plan B, treatment with Rituximab, developed, I believe, for treating cancer, but has since found other uses.
A four week course of intravenous infusions at one session per week. A blood test is necessary before each treatment, In Lincolnshire this is a major problem, the Phlebotomy service is totally overwhelmed. My first treatment took place at the Oncology Department of Lincoln Hospital. Treatment start was a little delayed because of not being able to get a necessary blood test.
Staff within the Oncology Department were absolutely amazing, I do not know how they do their job dealing with people coping with such traumatic circumstances and maintain their calm, cheerful and professional exteriors.
I will soon be back to Lincoln for treatment two, followed by two further doses at Grantham - timely blood tests permitting. I would give everyone I reacted with a medal.
My whole journey with United Lincolnshire Hospitals, a period of some ten months - but with the exception of the A&E Department - has run on rails. When it works, it works well. I am pleased I am on this track
"When it works, it works well"
