I am in my 50s, sailed through menopause (I know, I was one of the lucky ones), am overweight but never had major health problems apart from a gall bladder removal several years ago. I went to see the nurse practitioner about an unrelated matter and mentioned that I had had what appeared to be a menstrual bleed. With that I was placed on the 2 week cancer pathway to Lincoln Hospital for investigation.
I cannot fault the service received. I was in for ultrasound scans within 5 days and saw a consultant within 7 days and had a hysteroscopy which identified polyps in the womb, then just over a week later I was in for polyp removal via another hysteroscopy. All the staff at ULH were lovely, Mr Rodrigo who I saw initially and Miss Mangal and the team of nurses, Jackie, Ania and Jen who were there for the removal (and hand holding and keeping me distracted whilst things went on 'down below'). The offending polyp was removed and is now in a jar somewhere waiting to be examined to make sure it is not cancerous. If there is anything dodgy about it they will call me back in to discuss further.
For me, the treatment I received and the reassurance that I was being dealt with quickly meant that I did not have time to worry too much. It is frightening when you are told that it is the two week pathway and often the mind always thinks of the worse possibilities and doesn't hear the practice nurse tell you that it is a precaution and not to worry etc. Whilst the ultrasound and the procedures are not the most dignified, that does not matter - in my case, and pending the results, it appears to have been a polyp causing the bleeding and nothing more sinister but it could have been.
My advice to all my girlfriends and male friends as well, is that if there is something going on that's out of the ordinary, get it checked, it may be nothing but getting it checked might just save your life.
