Our 4 month old baby had an event where she stopped breathing, went limp and blue for seconds. We got such a fright that we took her straight to ED at FVRH. It was quicker for us to take her the 5 minute journey than it was to phone for an ambulance.
We arrived at ED to a full waiting room and a sign saying 12hr wait.
After an hour and a quarter I approached the receptionist to check that we were in the triage queue as I couldn’t believe that after over an hour, a tiny baby hadn’t even been triaged.
The receptionist was lovely and very apologetic (not her fault at all) and said we were next.
We eventually got triaged just before midnight and the nurse Kirsty was lovely and put our minds at ease. We then only waited 30 mins to see the doctor who was also lovely and checked our baby over and reassured us that all her vital signs were perfect, and chest clear.
My questions:
Why does FVRH not have a separate triage process for children? It seems very unfair to have babies and young children waiting in rooms full of sick adults, but also adults behaving terribly, cursing and swearing acting like they are in a pub.
The staff work tirelessly against a constant fight.
"No separate triage process for children"
