"High level of care and attention throughout"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

My appointment for my hip replacement was one day in early January at lunchtime. Once I checked into the reception desk I was then taken to the pre op ward where the staff were thorough and informative. My details were checked and triple checked, ie contact details, procedure I was in for.

I then met my surgeon who again double checked everything and drew on my hip to be operated on. He gave me a rough estimate of time I would be waiting. The staff regularly checked in on me ensuring I was ok. I was then taken to  the anaesthetist, who explained what was going to happen to me and how I would feel. I was kept informed and relaxed. I understand anaesthesia for about 2 hours as I was operated on.

When I came round I was taken to the post op recovery area, where I was monitored and looked after. I was then moved to the recovery ward where I was met by the dayshift nurses who immediately sprang into action making sure I was given painkillers and something substantial to eat, as I hadn't eaten in 24 hrs.  The Nightshift staff were first class ensuring that I received regular painkillers to control the pain, and ice packs for my knee which was giving me a lot of discomfort throughout the night. The following day the level of care and attention continued from nursing staff, auxiliary staff and also the physio staff.

Special mention to the physio staff who were enthusiastic informative, and who also injected a good dose of humour into the proceedings. I was again seen by surgeon who spoke to me at length, stating he was happy with the whole process and the end result so far.

I was discharged later on that Saturday evening, with my medication instructions and follow up appointments, along with contact numbers if any issues arose.
